u1 w6 Personal Proposal

October 18, 2007

Research Question:

I would like to examine elements of movement and stillness in actions undertaken in everyday life. To do this I would attempt to examine how we experience movement both physically and visually.  Linked with this I would like to try to understand how these movements can be seen as a record of change in an individuals life.

Context:

I would like to place this research in the context of a historical tradition of sequence of portraits or studies undertaken, such as those by David Hockney of his mother and Tracey Ermin’s ongoing content of work of personal reference, experience and change.

Methodology:

Drawing from my experience in the field of movement I would like to take as a starting point how the body learns through movement. Including repetitive ones such as walking or daily tasks undertaken.

As a starting point I will video the same action being performed repeatedly over  a sequence of days or month.

Resources:

Video camera eg: SonyHandy Cam, digital camera, softwear such as Adobe CS3, on line e-sketch book, own body and bodies of those around me.

Hi Susan, this sounds like a very interesting project. I like the idea of modest repetitive gestures.
I was lucky this summer to see Trisha Brown’s Dance troupe performing at Documenta in Kassel this summer.
What was amazing for me were these beautiful small repetive gestures which the dancers did to both American pop music- The Greatful Dead’s “Uncle John’s Band” (I thought I was in a time warp when I heard that playing! and more minimal Phil Glass type repetitive music.

I’m not clear how placing these small repetitive movements relates to David Hockney or Tracey Emin?

I like the idea of the video recording the movement- will you keep the camera fixed and static?

Hi David, thanks for the response.I mention David Hockney because of he often makes a series of portraits around one person,eg: those of his mother building up a dialogue about that person over a period of time. I would like to try to build up a series of small movements or movement sequences in the same sort of way. I mention Traey Emin as her work is about personal history and would like to draw on that aspect so the movements relate to an indiviual’s identity.

I am trying out both static and mobile filming at the moment and ideally using both. Over the past few days have been walking holding a camera and filming.

One idea was to try using several small cameras such as those you get to put on bikes or cycling helmets and attach them to various parts of a body to compile an all over view/sensation of a body moving. It would be great to then stitch those videos together!

    Susan

I love music – mostly early rock/blues. I have a few bits of video of recent local(London) bands which are non copyright and you are welcome to.
